The Presidential Suite at Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen is the hotel's crown jewel β spanning three ensuite bedrooms, a private library, a gym, and living areas that host up to eight guests. The design brief was unambiguous: real flame warmth in every room, with zero compromise on safety, air quality, or architectural integrity.
Wood fireplaces were ruled out first. Smoke extraction through a Shenzhen CBD high-rise would require core-drilling through multiple reinforced-concrete floors β impossible without structural recertification. Ash handling and dedicated maintenance staff were incompatible with a luxury suite's guest experience.
Gas fireplaces fell next. Running gas lines to ten individual fireplaces across three bedrooms, a library, and a gym demanded a permit pathway that could stall the project for months. Carbon monoxide monitoring and flue routing added cost and complexity disproportionate to the design benefit.
Electric fireplaces β the easy default β were rejected on principle. LED-lit "flames" lack the emotional depth, subtle heat, and tactile authenticity that define a presidential-calibre hospitality experience. Fake flame has no place in a suite designed for heads of state.
The client needed a ventless real-flame solution that could be installed across ten locations without penetrating a single wall or running a single gas line β and it had to meet the most stringent international fire-safety standards.
